Harmonic Analysis & Structure

Overview

Key: A♭ major · Meter: 4/4 · Core harmony: vi – IV – I – V

The official sheet music and Hooktheory both list "All of Me" in A♭ major. The top-rated Ultimate Guitar chart uses a capo on fret 1 with E-minor-shape chords and lists the tonality as F minor (A♭ major's relative minor), because the verse loop starts on Fm. This page shows everything at concert pitch: Em → Fm, C → D♭, G → A♭, D → E♭, Am → B♭m.

How to read this page: chord symbols come from the sources listed under Sources & Accuracy. Where sources report different chords for the same spot, the visualizer shows every reported version so you can compare them by ear. Consecutive repeats of the same chord are shown once. The piano voicings are our arrangement of the reported chord symbols, not a note-for-note transcription.

Verse, 2nd chordD♭maj7D♭(no5)
Verse, 4th chordE♭E♭5 (V with no 3rd)

These are mostly voicing details. Hooktheory records which chord tones are actually played in the piano part, while the guitar chart writes full chord shapes. The roots and the progression are the same in both.

Song form

The top-rated Ultimate Guitar chart lays out the song as Intro → Verse 1 → Pre-Chorus → Chorus → Verse 2 → Pre-Chorus → Chorus → Pre-Chorus (variation) → Chorus → Outro. The intro and outro use the verse loop.

Harmonic notes

  • vi – IV – I – V: the verse loop Fm – D♭ – A♭ – E♭ is a rotation of the axis progression. Starting on the minor vi chord gives the verse its tender, slightly melancholy color before the major-key chorus.
  • Pre-chorus: B♭m – A♭ – E♭ (ii – I – V) shifts the harmony and builds toward the chorus.
  • Chorus slash chords: B♭m/D♭ → D♭/E♭ → E♭. D♭/E♭ puts a D♭ triad over an E♭ bass, a soft, suspended-sounding dominant that resolves to a plain E♭. It's a hallmark of modern piano ballads.
  • Added 9ths: Fm(add9) and E♭(add9) add a warm, open color to the chorus.

Practice tips

  1. Learn the verse loop in root position first, then try the D♭maj7 color on the second chord.
  2. In the chorus, keep the right-hand D♭ triad still while the left hand moves D♭ → E♭ for the D♭/E♭ chord.
  3. Compare the Ultimate Guitar and Hooktheory versions of the verse to hear the difference between full chords and the sparser no-3rd/no-5th voicings.
