Harmonic Analysis & Structure

Overview

Key: F♯ minor · Tempo: about 90–92 BPM · Core harmony: i – VI – iv

Every source we checked agrees that "Flashing Lights" is in F♯ minor. That includes the publisher's official sheet-music listing, which gives F♯ minor as the original published key. Hooktheory and ChordU both put the tempo at roughly 90–92 BPM.

How to read this page: chord symbols come from the sources listed under Sources & Accuracy. Where sources report different chords for the same spot, the visualizer shows every reported version so you can compare them by ear. The piano voicings (which notes each hand plays) are our arrangement of those chord symbols, not a note-for-note transcription of the recording.

What the sources agree on

  • Key: F♯ minor.
  • Core movement: the song alternates F♯m → D and then moves to Bm. All three chord sources include these chords.
  • Common tones: F♯m (F♯–A–C♯) and D (D–F♯–A) share two notes, F♯ and A. That's why the alternation sounds so smooth and hypnotic: only one voice really moves.

Why they differ:

  • Detail level: Hooktheory writes the full extensions (9ths, 7ths), while the guitar chart simplifies to basic shapes. F♯m9 and F♯m have the same root and function; one just names more of the notes.
  • Method: ChordU's chords are generated automatically by audio-recognition software. Those tools often choose a major chord when the third isn't clearly audible, which may explain C♯ versus Hooktheory's C♯m7.
  • Lining up the sources: ChordU's sequence has no timing data. Its occasional C♯ – B – D – Bm – C♯ passage closely resembles Hooktheory's Instrumental (Bm7 – Dmaj7 – Bm7 – C♯m7), so we show ChordU's C♯ and B readings as alternatives at those spots. That alignment is our inference, not something ChordU states.
  • Implied harmony: hip-hop production often sketches harmony with a bass line and a few instrument lines instead of full chords, so different listeners can reasonably hear different chord qualities.

Song form

The top-rated Ultimate Guitar chart lays the song out as Intro → Verse 1 → Hook → Verse 2 → Hook → Hook 2 → Outro, with the same chord loop throughout. Hooktheory analyzes three sections, Intro, Chorus and Instrumental, and only its Instrumental section includes the C♯m7. The visualizer shows the shared main loop once, followed by Hooktheory's Instrumental progression.

Harmonic notes

  • i → VI (F♯m → D): a classic minor-key move. The bass drops a major third while the upper notes F♯ and A stay put.
  • VImaj7 contains the tonic triad: Dmaj7 is D–F♯–A–C♯, the F♯m triad over a D bass. That's one reason the Dmaj7 reading (Hooktheory) and the plain D reading (Ultimate Guitar, ChordU) sound so close.
  • iv (Bm): the move to the minor iv chord darkens the loop before it returns to F♯m.
  • v7 vs. V: Hooktheory's C♯m7 is the natural-minor v chord, with no raised leading tone, which gives a softer pull back to F♯m. ChordU's C♯ (major) would contain E♯, the leading tone, and pull harder. Toggle between the two in the visualizer to hear the difference.

Practice tips

  1. Start with the left hand alone: F♯ → D → F♯ → D → B, and feel the bass movement.
  2. In the right hand, keep A3 and F♯4 anchored through F♯m and D; only the middle note moves.
  3. Compare the reported versions (F♯m9 vs. F♯m, Dmaj7 vs. D, C♯m7 vs. C♯) and decide which matches the recording to your ear.
